Primary Purpose:

Plan and provide speech-language pathology services to students with speech, voice, and/or language disorders. Assess students and provide services to eliminate or reduce impairments that interfere with the student’s ability to derive full benefit from the educational program.

 

Qualifications:

 

 

Education/Certification:

Master’s degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university 

Valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology or Bachelor’s degree and valid Texas Education Agency speech therapy certificate

Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC’s)

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability administer, score and interpret a variety of assessment tools regarding speech and language communication disorders

Knowledge of an array of speech and language therapy techniques and strategies 

Ability to instruct individuals and small groups 

Ability to manage student behavior

Ability to create schedules for therapy

Ability to determine and provide appropriate therapy activities/materials for students

Ability to collaborate with other education professionals regarding evaluations, report writing and service provision 

Knowledge of/experience with assistive technology devices (low tech & high tech)

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

 

Experience:

One year supervised clinical speech-language pathology experience

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Therapy

  1. Conduct evaluations to determine student eligibility regarding speech-language disorders and provide appropriate individual and/or group therapy to students consistent with speech and language goals contained in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  2. Create goals/objectives for IEPs and evaluate student progress in order to make a recommendation regarding therapy services.
  3. Create and modify therapy schedules.
  4. Develop clinical management and diagnostic procedures.
  5. Lead and/or participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee (ARDC) meetings. Assist in the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate recommendations, and goal setting for students with communication disorders according to district procedures.

 

 Consultation

  1. Consult with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the progress of therapy goals, the needs of the student, and their involvement in the process.
  2. Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom activities to improve and enhance the communication skills of students.
  3. Collaborate with other special education assessment staff (SLPs, Educational Diagnosticians, LSSPs, etc.) in assessment, report writing, and services.
  4. Provide professional development to help school personnel identify and work effectively with students with communication disorders.

Student Management

  1. Create a motivating environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
  2. Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Program Management

  1. Participate in the ongoing evaluation of speech-language pathology services and make recommendations based on the findings.
  2. Participate in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  3. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.
  4. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard testing equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Frequent sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension

 

 

Environment: May require districtwide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under pressure
